The Power of Interactive Images

This week we delved into ThingLink, a website that lets you create visually-appealing, informative and interactive images that can have high impact on social media networks.

Nonprofits can amp up engagement and draw attention to their causes by sharing links to the images or embedding the images on social media and blogging platforms.

Here’s how it works: Once you set up an account on ThingLink, you can upload a photograph or an infographic, and then hit the “edit” button on the right side of the website to embed links to audio recordings, video snippets and stories on various parts of the image. For each link, you can enter a description and select an icon that will show up on the picture. Once you’re done, you can share or embed the image on your social media networks.

ThingLink can be particularly useful for nonprofits that want to share a lot of information on social media without inundating their supporters with numerous links to content on the web. For example, an environmental nonprofit can post an image depicting felled trees with links to the following resources embedded on the image: articles on protecting regions from deforestation, audio interviews on the dangers of cutting down trees and video snippets on what the organization is doing to save the trees. Nonprofits can also add links on the image to their call-to-action and donation pages on their websites.

Organizations can keep track of how many times people clicked on the links on the image and embedded the image on their websites using ThingLink’s built-in analytics.

There are a few things to keep in mind when using ThingLink. To get high engagement on social media, it’s important to select images that are compelling. It’s also important to be cautious with how much additional data you add to the image, because too many data points can be overwhelming.

Considering how difficult it can be to foster audience engagement, ThingLink could provide a major boost to nonprofits that are looking for creative and innovative new tools to drive up engagement.
